Community Cultures Yeast Lab

It’s official. We finally did it.. We changed our name to Community Cultures Yeast Lab!!

Although our headquarters will remain in San Antonio, and our passion and continued inspiration originates in the beautiful hill country and wild lands of Big Bend, our expanding yeast lab now offers native and unique cultures from all over the United States and the world. Our amazing community of brewers come from not only Texas, but also California, Arizona, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and even Italy! Our Citizen Scientists send in samples from all over the U.S. and also England, Germany, Spain, Prague, Morocco, and Mexico. In honor and gratitude for the amazing craft beer community that has supported, trusted, inspired, educated, and welcomed us, we have renamed the yeast division of Texas Cultures to incorporate all of the community that we serve. Community Cultures Yeast Lab will remain a department of Texas Culture Laboratories, and has expanded in its dedication to brewer’s, distiller’s, wine, and baker’s yeast, ongoing research in strain development, quality control, microbiological services, custom strains and blends, custom collaborations, yeast education, brewery lab education, and yeast banking services. Texas Cultures Laboratories will remain the headquarters for ongoing sustainability research, park service partnerships, university partnerships, and education and community outreach.

Government Canyon State Natural Area

Good news!! Texas Cultures Yeast Labs have been officially approved for a research grant, exploring and collecting yeast at one our favorite parks, Government Canyon! We will have access to examine their park and flora, take multiple samples, and share with their scientists our findings and research. This is exciting news for us, and we can’t wait to get started. We are especially interested in examining areas of Oak Wilt, and exploring ways in which non brewing yeast strains might have have positive results in combating further Oak Wilt growth. The next year of our permit will be an incredible opportunity for us to learn about other yeast strains and their potential roles in environmental applications and sustainability research!

Big Thicket National Preserve

We are thrilled and honored to announce that Texas Cultures Laboratories has been approved for a research expedition at Big Thicket National Preserve!! We have collected swabs and samples that will be tested for both brewery and research applications. Depending on our findings, we may have a permanent and ongoing research partnership with the National Park Service!! We spent an amazing 5 days, deep in the swamp lands and backcountry thicket of the national forrest. We can't wait to watch these samples grow, and cultivate strains for either local brewery use, or donations for university and research applications!!

Sustainability Projects

Our story starts with our love for the great outdoors, the pure wildness of the wild, and the beauty in every flower.  As such, our ultimate goal is to restore and conserve the nature we love.  As our samples come from flowers, fruits, berries, and tree sap in isolated and geographically distinct locations, we have the unique ability to test those samples for more than just their potential to make great beer and whiskey!  Our samples come from all over Texas, the U.S., and Mexico, and soon England, Australia, and Morocco.  We collect ourselves, and also have community scientists from various locations helping in our work. This aspect is crucial because each regionally distinct area offers a variety of yeast strains that can be cultivated for brewery yeast, as well as yeast strains essential for antimicrobial and cancer research, alternatives to pesticides, natural anti-fungals, organic and natural fertilizers, even biofuels!

At Texas Cultures Laboratories, we aim to cultivate pure, fresh, and unique yeast strains for brewery and distillery applications, collaborate, create, and customize with our local breweries, and provide essential laboratory services, all while we continue our own field research. Our brewery yeast sales and laboratory services help us to fund that conservation and sustainability research that we hope will make a difference for the next generation.

Our Vision

Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is to cultivate pure, unique, fresh yeast that is local and native, from every corner of the world.  To inspire community, collaboration, creativity, and artistry in the craft brewery industry. To categorize yeasts available in historically important, and regionally unique locations, as to promote the revival of culturally unique food and drink, and preserve the identity of communities around the world.

Our vision is to provide the purest and freshest yeast strains to local Texas breweries, distilleries, wineries, and bakeries, with a hands on approach that inspires family, community, and collaboration, while allowing us to give back to the wild that we love through sustainable business practices, ongoing and dedicated conservation research, volunteerism, and charitable donations to the state and national park systems.
